The Indian Constitution guarantees freedom of association.   The laws permit formation of associations and or trade unions.   In an organisational context, the principal purpose of these associations / trade unions is to regulate employee relations with an employer through collective bargaining, negotiation about the conditions of service, wages, other benefits, work environment, safety and welfare of the employees.   In India outside leadership is also permitted in the trade unions.   Managing these relations demand skill and expertise, also knowledge of various legal provisions, in achieving desired objectives.
